Grenada Rainforest
Feb 19
Submiter: Dex The trip had been planned twice and canceled for various reasons, so when I woke up to rain I figured the rest of the crew would find some way to eck out of the deal, however to their credit all were willing and ready. So we drove from St. George's on the coast up into the mountains around hairpin turn after another for about an hour climbing various mountain ranges as we went.

We are heading for Grand Etang a high Mountain lake that is the crater to one of Grenada's now dormant volcanoes and the outlying trail system that heads up into the mountains above the cloud cover.

The trail is narrow and muddy nearly all the time, and their are plenty of places where it falls off for hundreds of feet into dense underbrush. We were joking as we hiked above the cloud cover about the group we passed earlier from a cruise ship complaining about the rain,....in the rainforest..
But it cleared up and it ended up being clear once you reached the top of Mt. Qua Qua, with the rest of the Island getting dumped on for most of the day. This was great because normally this part of the mountain is veiled in fog and mist,
Once you are on top it is amazing, I sat at the edge of a rock I climbed up on that dropped off on one side hundreds of feet with the Atlantic thousands of feet below feeling the power of the wind blowing from Africa. From this Vantage you can see the whole of Grenada, and both the Caribbean and Atlantic in panoramic view.We spent the day watching the weather systems coming in off the Atlantic with the end of the day being veiled by the dense fog returning, giving the peaks a very mystical and special feeling. The sun was setting and the trails being difficult to pass, we rushed back racing the impending nightfall.
